Sri Lanka's president sworn inRanil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as Sri Lanka's new president on Thursday.

The public is furious he will continue in office during an economic catastrophe. 

Sri Lankans have taken to the streets for months to demand their leaders stand down. 

Accept responsibility for economic upheaval that has led to medicine, gasoline, & food shortages.

Wickremesinghe has earned demonstrators' ire as a Rajapaksa proxy. 

Six-time PM had never been president. He won the secret vote of MPs Wednesday to finish the term of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled after demonstrators stormed his home & resigned. 

Wickremesinghe, 73, has extensive diplomatic & international experience & oversaw IMF bailout talks. 

Despite public outrage at Wickremesinghe as an example of the nation's troubled political establishment, lawmakers apparently considered him the safer hand to lead the nation through the crisis. 

Demonstrators burned his home & occupied his office last week. Wickremesinghe urged MPs to work together after Wednesday's vote. Protesters chanted "Ranil, go home" at the presidential palace. 

Wickremesinghe took his oath of office in Parliament in Colombo on Thursday morning. He can pick a new PM.
