Sri Lanka's Parliament was set to accept nominations for a new president on Tuesday amid political uncertainty that threatens to aggravate the country's economic woes.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the nation last week after demonstrators assaulted his home & other public facilities.

He emailed the parliament speaker his resignation later.

Sajith Premadasa, Dallas Alahapperuma, & Anura Dissanayake will contest Wednesday's parliamentary vote.

Ranil Wickremesinghe hasn't indicated he'll run, but Rajapaksa's party has backed him.

Many regard his prospective candidacy as an extension of Rajapaksa control & a return for the family.

Separately, the Supreme Court will consider if Wickremesinghe's nomination as acting president last week was valid.

If ruled illegal, Wickremesinghe may lose his presidential eligibility. Students & activists plan Tuesday protests.

Social internet posters threatened MPs if they voted for Wickremesinghe.

Parliament was besieged & guarded by hundreds of soldiers. Before entering, parliament staff & media were searched.
